There's always a chance that the fail-safe could fail, though, which is why we don't consider these as safe as other vaping devices. The biggest risks in vaping devices come when you get into highly customizable "mods." These devices allow for lots of fine-tuning in terms of the internal electrical setup. But this added flexibility means more possibilities for health hazards. You'll have to be careful not to buy knock-off vape liquids with unhealthy contaminants, for one thing.
Any product that does not submit an application by this deadline must be removed from the marketplace, which if properly enforced, could lead a significantly smaller marketplace. The 966 respondents who had never vaped more often believed that e-cigarette waste was dangerous to throw in trash compared to the 1,083 respondents who had vaped at least once (81.4% vs. 71%). Fewer of those who had vaped at least once (79.3%) believed that e-cigarettes contained toxic substances compared to those who had never vaped (89.6%). Young respondents clearly recognized the dangers of e-cigarette waste to humans and the environment and want an appropriate method to recycle.

Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).

E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. They come in a variety of forms, sometimes looking like USB flash drives, pens, and other items that make them hard for parents and teachers to spot. Other electronic devices that heat tobacco instead of liquid nicotine, such as IQOS, are not considered e-cigarettes. Teens cannot participate in such studies, but "we all agree that e-cigs are not a good thing for youth and nonsmokers," Dr. Baldassarri says. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking.
However, to date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for quitting smoking. Among people who were currently using e‑cigarettes, the proportion of people who used them daily remained stable from 2016 (42%) to 2019 (42%), then increased in 2022–2023 (49%). While more males than females used e‑cigarettes daily, the change among females was much greater than among males, rising from 36% in 2019 to 51% in 2022–2023. This corresponds to a fourfold increase in the number of females using e‑cigarettes daily, from approximately 70,000 to 300,000 (Figure 2).
Nicotine-free e-juice contains a number of potentially toxic chemicals, such as base liquids and flavoring agents. However, based on the experience with cigarettes, similar adverse health effects, including COPD, heart disease, and cancer, can be expected. About 43% of the study participants were LGBTQ+ adolescents, for instance, and research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people smoke and vape at a higher prevalence than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The new study included a diverse group of adolescents, indicating how the text message program could be helpful for marginalized communities, said Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. "Text messaging is a scalable and cost-efficient approach to delivering vaping cessation treatment on a population basis," the researchers wrote in the study.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. E-cigarettes are not completely risk free but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. In regard to COVID-19 pandemic, the actual literature suggests that nicotine vaping may display adverse outcomes. Therefore, follow up studies are necessary to clarify the impact of e-cigarette consumption on human health in SARS-CoV-2 infection. Recently, a commonly commercialized crème brûlée-flavoured aerosol was found to contain high concentrations of benzoic acid (86.9 μg/puff), a well-established respiratory irritant [88]. When human lung epithelial cells (BEAS-2B and H292) were exposed to this aerosol for 1 h, a marked cytotoxicity was observed in BEAS-2B but not in H292 cells, 24 h later.
We would argue that further studies with chronic administration of low doses of nicotine are required to clearly evaluate its impact on carcinogenicity. In this line, a study compared the acute impact of CS vs. e-cigarette vaping with equivalent nicotine content in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Both increased markers of oxidative stress and decreased NO bioavailability, flow-mediated dilation, and vitamin E levels showing no significant differences between tobacco and e-cigarette exposure (reviewed in [20]). Inasmuch, short-term e-cigarette use in healthy smokers resulted in marked impairment of endothelial function and an increase in arterial stiffness (reviewed in [20]). Similar effects on endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness were found in animals when they were exposed to e-cigarette vapor either for several days or chronically (reviewed in [20]).
Revenues collected, including interest and penalties, from the CECET are deposited into the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax Fund.
