In Cumberland County, Chalmers McClain and Graham said the growing number of vape shops opening near schools with their colorful and bright lights to attract students is also part of the problem. For example, Ramsey Street Alternative High School has two vape shops within a six-minute walk from the school. Teacher concerns around increasing the suspension rates of students caught vaping on school property prompted the initial pilot and current implementation of CATCH My Breath into county schools, said Graham.

Some public health experts believe that e-cigarettes are an essential alternative to smoking tobacco that can help smokers quit. Others argue that e-cigarettes could be a route into nicotine addiction and point out that their long-term safety has not yet been proven. There are also those that believe that e-cigarettes may offer public health benefits but that e-cigarettes should be regulated, particularly when it comes to the marketing of such products.
In 2019, four years after JUUL introduced a new nicotine delivery system coupled with a relentless online, youth-focused marketing campaign, more than a quarter (27.5%) of high school students reported using e-cigarettes. Short-term studies haven't found evidence that exposure to secondhand aerosol from e-cigarettes hurts lung function, with one notable exception. Researchers found that people who were around vaping aerosol showed increases in serum cotinine, which is a marker that someone was exposed to nicotine (an ingredient often found in e-cigarettes). Given the long list of health risks posed by nicotine, more research needs to be done on how this exposure could affect someone’s lungs long-term like it can with secondhand smoke. Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.

This has been observed with family-level SEP indicators, including parental education [3, 4] and family affluence [5]as well as individual-level indicators of adulthood SEP such as academic performance [4, 5] and vocational education [6–8]. For smokeless tobacco (snus) use and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, the associations with SEP have been mixed [7, 9, 10]. Tracing what happens to that vapor once it is inhaled is equally problematic.

One chemical, known as 6-methyl nicotine, has been shown in rodent experiments to be far more potent than nicotine in targeting the brain's nicotine receptors and more toxic than nicotine. Another, called nicotinamide, is marketed as targeting the same brain receptors as nicotine, despite evidence it does not bind to these receptors.
If used during pregnancy, nicotine may also cause premature births and low birthweight babies. The authors acknowledge that more frequent use of e-cigarettes may also reflect greater determination to quit smoking combustible cigarettes and that their study did not evaluate risks of youth e-cigarette use. Over the next few years, the optimism over e-cigarettes waned as their popularity skyrocketed. Juul’s sales increased over 600 percent each year to become the best selling device on the market while I inhaled an atmosphere’s worth of vanilla vapor into my lungs.

The group then performed a statistical analysis to determine group differences in vascular function before and after vaping.
Taken together, the studies provide strong evidence that an interactive, tailored text message program can help teens and their older peers break free from nicotine addiction. These findings are especially important given the recent youth mental health crisis documented by the U.S. Adolescents in this study were characterized by high severity of past-year problems with depression, sleep, anxiety, trauma, and substance use. In addition, moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence were observed across multiple measures, with more than three-quarters (76.2%) of teens vaping within 30 minutes of waking — a common way to measure addiction. No amount of nicotine is safe for youth as there may be long-term, damaging effects on learning, memory, attention, behavior problems, and future addiction. Electronic cigarettes or vapes (referred to collectively as ‘e‑cigarettes’) are personal vaping devices where users inhale aerosol rather than smoke. The inhaled aerosol usually contains flavourings, a range of toxic chemicals, and may contain nicotine as well (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023a).
While FDA has made progress in reviewing marketing applications for flavored e-cigarettes, it has repeatedly missed deadlines to complete its review of major products and failed to clear the market of these illegal flavored products. Here you will find the facts on vaping, based on scientific evidence and research, plus advice on how to use vapes (sometimes called e-cigarettes or e-cigs) as a tool to quit smoking. Battery-powered vape devices create an aerosol that looks like water vapor but contains nicotine, flavoring, and more than 30 other chemicals. The aerosol is inhaled into the lungs where the nicotine and chemicals cross over into the bloodstream. The earliest vape devices looked like cigarettes. With Americans puffing less each year, the cigarette industry sees ESDs and other smokeless products as financial saviors. E-cigarette sales tripled between 2012 and 2013 rising from $500 million to over $1.5 billion and are expected to soon exceed the sales of traditional cigarettes, motivating giant tobacco and other non-cigarette companies to market this product.
In this article, we discuss the risks of vaping versus smoking and consider the long-term effects and risks of both. In light of these results, policymakers might want to consider other approaches to protect public health where tobacco is concerned, the authors wrote in the study. Of the increase in cigarette sales, 71% were of non-menthol cigarettes, suggesting that restrictions on menthol cigarettes would not counteract this effect. The primary outcome of interest was volume sales of conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes per capita, during each four-week period, both overall and by type of flavor. Cigarette volumes are measured in packs, while e-cigarettes are standardized to 0.7-milliliter units, given past industry claims that one 0.7-milliliter vape pod is equivalent to 20 conventional cigarettes, or one pack.
Jabba and colleagues, including co-senior author Sven Eric Jordt, Ph.D., analyzed an e-cigarette product sold under the brand name Spree Bar, which comes in at least nine flavors and is listed as containing 5 percent 6-methyl nicotine. Study results showed the actual amount of the chemical was about 88% less than labeled. The e-cigarettes also included an artificial sweetener that is up to 13,000 times sweeter than table sugar, and an artificial coolant that mimics menthol’s effects. Talk to your patients, including youth and young adults, about the dangers of tobacco use.
The State of Victoria and the Department of Health shall not bear any liability for reliance by any user on the materials contained on this website. The products available in Australia are often made up of many parts, from all over the world, which makes it difficult to assess the safety of the overall product. Most e-cigarettes available in retail stores have not been tested or approved by the TGA, which means their safety cannot be guaranteed. Children are exposed to e-cigarette advertising online and on TV, in magazines and billboards. Although it is illegal for e-cigarettes to be sold to youth under age 21, they can be ordered online. While flavors were nationally banned in 2019, this ban excludes mint and menthol flavors.
E-liquid physical properties are also important in carbonyl formation15,47,84,86. The viscosity and density of the e-liquid determine its mobility, capillary action, and delivery to the wick and coil, influencing the likelihood of a dry puff15. Sub-ohm vapes (sometimes called cloud kits) are more advanced vaping devices that are capable of outputting huge amounts of power; if you’ve ever noticed someone exhaling gigantic clouds from their kit, they were probably using one of these! Using a sub-ohm device requires a working knowledge of battery safety and Ohm’s Law, so it’s best to do some reading before investing in one. "India should be taking lessons from the West where vaping has become an epidemic. Claims that e-cigarettes aid cessation is a big lie, rather they are gateway devices.
When the human body breaks down a foreign substance, one can typically find chemical by-products in hair or urine that provide clues about how it has interacted with cells. This is true for nicotine, but in the case of propylene glycol, no one has established what the relevant by-product is or how to best detect it. Boston, MA – Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Two other potentially harmful related compounds were also found in many of the tested flavors, which included varieties with potential appeal to young people such as Cotton Candy, Fruit Squirts, and Cupcake. In conclusion, the prevalence of susceptibility among adolescents differs by product type. Liking school and academically oriented educational aspirations appear as consistent protective factors, while the use of other tobacco or nicotine products and positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group appear as risk factors.
Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
Short-acting nicotine replacement therapies — such as nicotine gum, lozenges, nasal sprays or inhalers — can help you overcome intense cravings. These short-acting therapies are usually safe to use along with long-acting nicotine patches or one of the non-nicotine stop-smoking drugs. Mothers Against Vaping told Mint that they fear for their teenage children.
These findings can reflect general openness to nicotine use, indicated by a previous study showing considerable overlap between susceptibility types [24]. Several school-level factors have a role in both youth tobacco use and educational pathways. These include school rules and policies, physical environment, curriculum, discipline, school health services, school social and learning environment, student commitment to learning and school community as well as parents and the broader community [26]. Further, school influence partly occurs through the perceptions of smoking behaviour in the social network (descriptive norms) and perceptions of social network beliefs (injunctive norms), which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
This includes banning the sale of all non-prescription e-cigarettes and prohibiting the sale of any disposable or single-use e-cigarettes. Health experts are concerned about the various chemical ingredients within e-cigarettes. Even though it is illegal to sell e-cigarettes and e-liquids containing nicotine in Victoria, there is no guarantee that products purchased will not contain nicotine. Research now shows that young people who initially use e-cigarettes, who have never smoked before, are 3 times more likely to take up tobacco smoking. That aerosol is often called ‘vapour’ and inhaling it from an e-cigarette is known as ‘vaping’.
A priority of the New York State Tobacco Control Program is to prevent the initiation of tobacco use, including combustible tobacco and electronic cigarettes, by youth and young adults. The Program funds Reality Check, the youth engagement component for New York State teens, ages 13-18, to increase support for New York State's tobacco-free and vape-free norms through youth action and community engagement. Evidence-based, policy-driven, and cost-effective approaches are implemented to decrease youth tobacco use, protect youth from exposure to tobacco marketing and imagery, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Visit Reality Check for more information and to find your local Reality Check group. According to a 2019 CDC industry update, one out of every 10 high school students reported using tobacco products, due in part to easy access through mail deliveries and online sellers.
A 2021 review found people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, as well as having expert face-to-face support, can be up to twice as likely to succeed as people who used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum. Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. Most vape liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the vapor.
Such policies are critical in the absence of strong federal regulation of e-cigarettes. As of March 31, 2023, seven states and an estimated 388 counties, cities, towns, and tribes have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco products. However, this leaves a large majority of the U.S. population not covered by such restrictions. E-cigarette sales have rapidly escalated in the relatively short history of the products. Overall e-cigarette sales, as well as the total number of e-cigarette brands, increased by more than 46% between January 2020 and December 2022. Disposable e-cigarettes have nearly tripled in nicotine strength, quintupled in e-liquid capacity, and dropped in price by nearly 70% between 2017 and 2022.
In the multivariate model (Table 3), results were similar for both girls and boys. S-EC remained higher for those planning for vocational education, and lower with liking school. Further, S-EC was higher with parental smoking, positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and current snus use. Between-school differences were larger for girls (MOR 1.23) than boys (MOR 1.16). Educational aspirations were measured with ‘Where do you primarily want to go to study after comprehensive school?
