However, many young users report they began using e-cigarettes because of the flavors and, according to CDC, do not realize they are inhaling nicotine. E-cigarettes are relatively new, and their long-term effects are not yet known. Although they may potentially be less harmful substitutes for traditional cigarettes, risks of addiction, injury, and death from e-cigarettes are becoming more apparent. Wehrli noted that they observed these striking changes after the participants (all of whom never smoked previously) used an e-cigarette a single time.
The FDA does not currently require testing of all the substances in e-cigarettes to ensure they are safe. It's also hard to know exactly what chemicals are in an e-cigarette because most products do not list all of the harmful or potentially harmful substances contained in them. E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, but many of them contain nicotine, which comes from tobacco. Because of this, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies them as "tobacco products." For adults who smoke, switching completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes may reduce exposure to many harmful chemicals present in cigarettes. However, it is important that they switch completely from cigarettes to e-cigarettes to get the full health benefit.
Read this paper by NCI’s Dr. Ned Sharpless and CRUK’s Dr. Iain Foulkes. Drug forums and e-liquid vendors were monitored by the researchers for e-liquids that "purportedly contained alternative pharmaceuticals." A clue in searching for e-liquids that contain illicit drugs is cost, the scientists said. Most nicotine e-liquids range from $5 to $10, while alternative drug e-liquids go for five to twenty times as much. In comparison to the general population, support for these measures varied greatly among people who currently used e‑cigarettes. The most supported measure was prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age (67%), while the least supported measure was banning all additives in e‑cigarettes, to make them less attractive to young people (33%) (Figure 7).
"Parents should base their information on accurate facts and also encourage their children to read about and understand the science on this issue instead of relying on what their friends and peers tell them." Oregon Health & Science University is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for all Oregonians through excellence, innovation and leadership in health care, education and research. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has regulatory authority over synthetic nicotine as it does over tobacco-derived nicotine.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. A federal appeals court ruled in December 2010 that the agency lacked authority over e-cigs because they offer only the recreational benefits of a regular cigarette.
Njoy is one of only three companies that previously received FDA’s OK for vaping products. Like those products, two of the Njoy menthol varieties come as cartridges that plug into a reusable device that heats liquid nicotine, turning it into an inhalable aerosol. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Lung Association are glad to have the rules. But, Sward adds, "We certainly thought [the FDA] should have gone farther -- ending the sale of flavored products." Some come in candy and fruity flavors that appeal to kids and teens. Sward points out that according to the FDA, there's no evidence any e-cigarette is safe and effective at helping smokers quit. She suggests talking to your doctor about medications and other strategies that are proven stop-smoking tools. There is an urgent, overdue need for standardized processes for the disposal of e-cigarette devices, refills and e-liquids. Waste management and hazardous waste disposal plants are not currently equipped to handle e-cigarette waste and federal regulations still have not caught up to the need for guidance on disposal of these types of small electronics containing toxic waste.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a combination of counseling and medications as the best strategy for quitting smoking. Vaping companies have long claimed their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The FDA has not authorized any flavored e-cigarette products and reports that it has denied marketing applications for millions of flavored products. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. When e-cigarette products first became popular, we didn’t have much information about health risks.
Differences between schools exist, but having more students with no nicotine use showed protective associations, while having more students with positive attitudes towards product use in one’s age group increased the susceptibility. The results of the present study suggest that both interventions tailored by educational aspirations and universal school policies are needed to reach youth at high-risk of initiation. The concentration of nicotine in the BB57 emissions relative to BB18 was three times greater and followed the three-fold increase in nicotine strength of the e-liquid. In the cigarette smoke, the measured nicotine concentration of 0.23 ± 0.01 mg puff–1 (Table 1), equivalent to 2.07 ± 0.09 mg cig−1, is in accordance with the Ky1R6F certificate value of 1.9 ± 0.1 mg cig−1 (ISO Intense smoking regime)56.

Much like free-base nicotine products, these liquids contain propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, as well as other chemicals such as flavouring ingredients. Most vaping devices use electrical power from a battery to heat a liquid solution. The term "vaping" is also used to refer to the inhalation of cannabis aerosols, which are produced by products that differ from nicotine products described on this page. Propylene glycol and glycerin are the most common solvents used in vapor products. While generally recognized as safe for ingestion by the FDA, research has found both substances to be toxic when aerosolized through the vaping process.
Screen all patients, encourage them to quit, and refer patients to evidence-based services for help quitting. The airflow allows for a nice mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw in which you hold each puff in your mouth for a bit before inhaling. This could be a little easier on your lungs, since the vapor can cool down before you breathe it in.
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.
Electronic smoking devices (or ESDs), which are often called e-cigarettes, heat and vaporize a solution that typically contains nicotine. The devices are metal or plastic tubes that contain a cartridge filled with a liquid that is vaporized by a battery-powered heating element. The aerosol is inhaled by the user when they draw on the device, as they would a regular tobacco cigarette, and the user exhales the aerosol into the environment. Electronic cigarettes (E-Cigarettes) are battery-powered devices that function by heating a liquid into an aerosol that is inhaled by the user.
Freebase nicotine products can be used in refill liquids or in cartridges for closed systems. Because the brain experiences significant development during adolescence, nicotine use during this critical time can rewire the brain which can make it easier for youth to get addicted to other substances due to issues with impulse control. Together, these three categories accounted for almost two thirds of expenditures in 2021. If you or someone you know has had a safety issue with an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette or vape), please report the problem to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the FDA Safety Reporting Portal (hhs.gov). At press time, the European Parliament had approved a ban on e-cigarette advertising starting in mid-2016, and the ban seemed likely to get approval from the E.U.'s member states. Vaping products in the state also have to include health warnings per California state laws regarding the use of nicotine and other chemicals.
E-cigarettes have been allowed to stay on the market for years without undergoing a full review of their public health impact, sparking a sustained and ongoing crisis of youth use. As of November 2023, the FDA has not completed reviewing all applications from e-cigarette makers to market their products, leaving many e-cigarettes on the market while waiting for a decision. To date, the FDA has denied permission to market flavored and menthol e-cigarette products such as Vuse Solo, Vuse Vibe, Vuse Ciro, and Vuse Alto. The FDA has denied permission to market many non-tobacco and non-menthol flavored e-cigarette products, however, many of those denials are currently under judicial or supervisory review. In recent years, the FDA has increased enforcement efforts around e-cigarette manufacturers and retailers for continuing to sell youth-appealing e-cigarettes. These actions include issuing warning letters, fines, injunctions, and joint operations with other federal officials to seize imports of unauthorized e-cigarette products.

The researchers said that the findings suggest that if tobacco cigarette smokers who use e-cigarettes for a healthier alternative to tobacco won’t benefit by the switch. Cannabis and CBD e-liquids usually contain other chemicals, such as base liquids or flavoring agents. They may cause side effects similar to those of nicotine-free e-cigarettes. Young people who vape nicotine are more likely to start smoking cigarettes in the future. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking. Some people believe e-cigarettes may help lower nicotine cravings in those who are trying to quit smoking. One chemical, known as 6-methyl nicotine, has been shown in rodent experiments to be far more potent than nicotine in targeting the brain's nicotine receptors and more toxic than nicotine. Another, called nicotinamide, is marketed as targeting the same brain receptors as nicotine, despite evidence it does not bind to these receptors.

Based on the current literature, it seems that several factors have led to the success of e-cigarette use as a smoking cessation tool. First, some e-cigarette flavours positively affect smoking cessation outcomes among smokers [102]. Second, e-cigarettes have been described to improve smoking cessation rate only among highly-dependent smokers and not among conventional smokers, suggesting that the individual degree of nicotine dependence plays an important role in this process [97]. Third, the general belief of their relative harmfulness to consumers' health compared with conventional combustible tobacco [103]. And finally, the exposure to point-of-sale marketing of e-cigarette has also been identified to affect the smoking cessation success [96].
However, the state's largely rural landscape and small population could be partly to blame for its high youth vaping rate. Both the electronic devices and the different e-liquids are easily available in shops or online stores. The long-term health effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not fully understood, but the science indicates they are not a safe alternative to smoking. Most are noncombustible which includes a battery, a heating element, and a liquid compartment, usually containing addictive nicotine, that is added to the e-liquid or included in the device. The heating element aerosolizes the liquid for the inhalation of the liquid nicotine or other contents.

E-cigarettes are devices that use an electric battery to heat up a liquid (commonly called an "e-liquid") into an aerosol, which the user inhales. The high standard deviation for glyoxal and methylglyoxal observed in BB18 e-cigarette emissions is probably related to an analytical sample matrix effect and/or batch variability83,96,97. Despite the high standard deviation, the percentage reduction of glyoxal and methylglyoxal in both e-cigarette emissions relative to cigarette smoke was ≥ 97.0% and ≥ 94.5%, respectively (Table 3).

In other words, just because something is safe to eat doesn’t mean it’s safe to be inhaled. (Duh.) Vaping also seems to trigger potentially harmful immune responses in the lungs.

At the start of the 20th century, the per capita annual consumption in the U.S. was 54 cigarettes (with fewer than 0.5% of the population smoking more than 100 cigarettes per year), and consumption there peaked at 4,259 per capita in 1965. The authors wish to thank all adolescents and schools that participated in the SHP study in 2017, and the SHP study coordinators from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare who prepared the initial data and provided practical support with it.
This means that e-cigarettes cannot be used in areas where smoking is banned. Patients affected by the disease have symptoms ranging from cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath to fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and fever. Since the initial outbreak, federal and state officials have reported thousands of cases and dozens of deaths related to EVALI. Ventilation, filtration and air cleaning techniques may reduce harmful substances released from e-cigarette use indoors but are not likely to eliminate them. Learn more about e-cigarette aerosol from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA faced a self-imposed court deadline at the end of this month to wrap up its yearslong review of major vaping brands, including Juul and Vuse.
You can turn to our smoking cessation resource center, which has tips for how to stop smoking, information on smoking cessation therapies, and more. Doctors may also recommend prescription and nonprescription medications to help you quit. For people with vaginas, it can result in sexual dissatisfaction by decreasing lubrication and the ability to reach orgasm. Babies may be born with underdeveloped lungs if the pregnant person smokes during pregnancy. Smoking damages the airways, air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, and cilia, which are tiny hair-like structures that prevent dirt and mucus from entering your lungs.

The last reviewed date indicates when the evidence for this resource last underwent a comprehensive review. Reviewed by Kenneth Uy, a health coach and tobacco treatment specialist at Henry Ford Health. Patrick O’Connor, MD, Yale Medicine’s chief of general internal medicine, who has dedicated his career to researching opioid and alcohol drug abuse, points to similarities between epidemic cigarette use in the 1940s and 50s, and e-cigarette use now.
In fact, the overall evidence points to e-cigarettes actually helping people to give up smoking tobacco. There is no evidence that e-cigarettes are undermining England’s falling smoking rates. Instead the evidence consistently finds that e-cigarettes are another tool for stopping smoking and in my view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely. E-cigarettes not only pose substantial health risks to youth and young adults, they pose a significant environmental threat (see the Truth Initiative fact sheet on Tobacco and the Environment). Almost half (49.1%) of young people don’t know what to do with used e-cigarette pods and disposable devices. A second brand of e-cigarettes—marketed as Nixotine, Nixodine, Nixamide and Nic-Safe—contained a nicotine analog called nicotinamide, also at levels lower than the labels indicated, and combined with undisclosed amounts of 6-methyl nicotine.
Many e-cigarettes sold in the U.S. contain far more nicotine than e-cigarettes sold elsewhere, which increases the risk of addiction and harm to the developing brains of youth and young adults. Marketing tactics targeting young people have contributed to the rapid increase in use. The long-term risks of exclusive use of e-cigarettes are not fully known but evidence is accumulating that e-cigarette use has negative effects on the cardiovascular system and lungs.
If a child ingests or touches fluids with an allergen in it, they could have a reaction. This, however, is only a theoretical risk for now, as little research has been done on the topic. One study, for example, found that under most conditions, someone vaping at home all day didn’t change the air quality a terrible amount unless they vaped intensely at a high voltage.
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health — smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke. The Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit. If smokers are ready to quit smoking for good, they should call QUITNOW or talk with their doctor about finding the best way to quit using proven methods and FDA-approved treatments and counseling. Among girls, only a higher proportion of never-users in the school remained protective for S-SM and S-EC. Among boys, the same was observed for S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards snus use in one’s age group increased S-SN. Interestingly, a higher proportion of students planning for general upper secondary education had lowered S-EC and S-SN in the univariate analyses but increased S-SM and S-SN in the multivariate models. This may reflect, for instance, more complex interactions between individual- and school-level factors influencing susceptibility among boys. In general, students with positive attitude towards product use in one’s age group and current use of some other tobacco or nicotine product had consistently higher susceptibility regardless of product type.
"Popcorn lung" is another name for bronchiolitis obliterans (BO), a rare condition that results from damage of the lungs’ small airways. BO was originally discovered when popcorn factory workers started getting sick. The culprit was diacetyl, a food additive used to simulate butter flavor in microwave popcorn.
In 2022, PMI launched a "disposable" e-cigarette called VEEBA (see below). However, PMI’s interests in e-cigarettes are relatively minor compared to its interests in HTPs. This page gives an overview of TTCs interests in e-cigarettes, which have been acquired, developed and sold by these companies since 2012. Products produced by other companies which do not have links to TTCs are not covered on TobaccoTactics. JUUL is a type of e-cigarette/vapor product that has become increasingly popular, especially among youth.
These refills are cheaper than disposables, but they're almost as foolproof. Switching from cigarettes to e-cigarettes could also save you a lot of money. Some people spend more than others but in general smoking costs more than vaping. Now there is an option available to me that is far less harmful or offensive as cigarettes and, for now, I am allowed to enjoy the company of my friends and family indoors with the rest of society. No longer do I have to huddle under the awning of a building, trying to avoid the rain, nor do I have to freeze my fingers off trying to rush through a cigarette just so everyone else can be satisfied.
According to the CDC, 15% of EVALI patients were less than 18 years old. In addition, e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vapor may contain the chemicals or substances listed below. E-cigarettes are known by many different names, and sometimes people find it hard to understand what is really known about these devices.
It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.
Heating the liquid (e-juices) causes formation of an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. These electronic smoking devices come in different shapes and sizes and can look like regular cigarettes, pens, and even flash drives (similar to the popular brand "JUUL"). E-cigarettes go by many names including vapes, e-cigs, e-pens, e-hookahs and mods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) extended its regulatory authority over tobacco products to include e-cigarettes in May 2016.
Beginning July 1, 2019, Illinois law prohibits the sale of tobacco products, including these products, to people younger than age 21. The smoke also caused damage to the lungs and bladders of mice, indicating that it may increase the risks of developing lung and bladder cancer. Since e-cigarettes arrived in the U.S. in 2007, they have been investigated by addiction researchers as possible cessation devices for adults trying to quit combustible, or regular, cigarettes.
Many grants on this topic are funded through the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program, an NIH partnership with FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products to fund research to inform FDA’s tobacco regulatory activities. Interestingly, most of these reports linking COVID-19 harmful effects with smoking or vaping, are based on their capability of increasing the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the lung. It is well known that ACE2 is the gate for SARS-CoV-2 entrance to the airways [106] and it is mainly expressed in type 2 alveolar epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages [107]. To date, most of the studies in this field indicate that current smokers have higher expression of ACE2 in the airways (reviewed by [108]) than healthy non-smokers [109, 110]. While tobacco products have been a long-standing public health issue, e-cigarette (aka e-cigs, vape pens, vapes) use has continued to gain popularity throughout the last decade. Poison centers began receiving calls about e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products in 2010, which overlaps with the initial period where these products reached the U.S. market.
At last I can feel like I am a part of society again, and not some evildoer who deserves to be sent out to the village gates to hide my atrocious acts. Siegel is concerned that the use of nicotine salts could make the Juul more addictive. "With Juul, the pattern of use isn’t kids having a cherry vape every now and then," he said. "It’s kids sneaking off to the bathroom, kids vaping consistently throughout the day." Siegel said that he was keeping an eye on this behavior.
Nicotine salts can be used in refill liquids and in cartridges for closed systems. In March 2019, the Secretariat of the WHO FCTC issued an Information Note which compiled all Conference of the Parties (COP) decisions related to e-cigarettes. Information on current e-cigarette regulation can also be found on relevant pages of government websites (see Relevant Links below). See this page for information on the situation in 2014, when there was little regulation in place.
Cigarette smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in this country, killing nearly five hundred thousand people each year. (According to some studies, more than half of longtime smokers will die from smoking-related complications.) It’s incredibly hard to stop smoking; people spend lifetimes trying. Around seventy per cent of American smokers say that they want to quit, and for many of them e-cigarettes have been a godsend. But, according to a 2017 study by the C.D.C., about fifty per cent more high schoolers and middle schoolers vape than smoke. Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the e-cigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape.
Even if you’re a tobacco user, having an open, honest discussion with your teen can help. The most important thing to understand is that the liquid in e-cigarette cartridges is not regulated by the FDA. Keep reading to learn more about vaping and how it’s affecting young people.
The device heats a liquid into an aerosol (sometimes known as "vapour" and mistakenly called "water vapour"). Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, and pouches. Over 50% of middle school and high school students reported seeing e-cigarette advertising. Only 28% of young people in the U.S. believe e-cigarettes have the potential to cause a lot of harm. Up to 40% of teens who vape are unaware their e-cigarette cartridges contain nicotine. E-cigarettes can also be used to vape marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient, THC.
