A Foundation-led study presented at the 2024 Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco annual meeting found that monthly e-cigarette sales in California declined by 41% after statewide restrictions on the sale of flavored tobacco products took effect. However, the report also noted that the tobacco industry continues to market products to offset these declines, including non-menthol cigarettes that contain other cooling chemicals. Continuing to monitor flavored tobacco product sales is key to assessing policies like these and informing further policy development and implementation. Toxicity is not the only factor in considering risk to an individual or a population from exposure to ENDS emissions.
Not to mention the smell that lingers on a person’s body after finishing a cigarette, even if it was outside, far outlasts a vape any day. At Cornell, Jason told me, people Juuled in bathrooms and classrooms, in "every nook and cranny of this campus." In the fall, he’d started a group text, with a few friends, to coördinate pod runs. He called the group Juuluminati, and it has since grown to three hundred and twenty-four members. Jason was Juuling while he talked to me, on the third floor of an academic building. "I know for a fact that there are two or three of my good friends sitting on the first floor of this building eating ham sandwiches and just Juuling away," he said.
However, it has been reported that the heating process can lead to the generation of new decomposition compounds that may be hazardous [4, 5]. The levels of nicotine, which is the key addictive component of tobacco, can also vary between the commercially available e-liquids, and even nicotine-free options are available. For this particular reason, e-cigarettes are often viewed as a smoking cessation tool, given that those with nicotine can prevent smoking craving, yet this idea has not been fully demonstrated [2, 6, 7].
Long periods of dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes can result in harms to health similar to, or in addition to, the harms from exclusive use of cigarettes. Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving.
This solution typically contains propylene glycol or glycerol, nicotine, and flavouring agents. Indeed, the "vapor" may have a lot more than those five ingredients listed above. Some studies have found it to contain lead, nickel, tin, and silver from the machinery inside the devices along with formaldehyde, manganese, tolulene, and other ingredients linked to cancer, central nervous system problems, and other possible health issues. A 2018 study of e-cig smokers’ urine found at least five of the same carcinogens found in cigarettes.
The increasing number of adolescent users and reported deaths in the United States prompted the government to ban the sale of flavoured e-cigarettes in 2020. The difference in opinion worldwide may be due to different restrictions imposed. For example, while no more than 20 ng/mL of nicotine is allowed in the EU, e-liquids with 59 mg/dL are currently available in the United States. Nevertheless, despite the national restrictions, users can easily access foreign or even counterfeit products online. Is there sufficient toxicological data on all the components employed in e-liquids?
Our experts provide care to both kids and adults with complex lung issues from all over Southern California and beyond. Teens today have access to more potentially misleading information than at any other time in history. They’re also bombarded by more sources of advertising than ever before.

I can go for six months at a time without catching a nasty, lingering cough. My clothing doesn’t reek of smoke all of the time and my car actually smells nice. So, though they are far from perfect, I am enjoying the changes that not smoking cigarettes has brought to my life. "Since there is no safe tobacco product, eventual abstinence from all tobacco products is the end goal," says Dr. Hyland, who is senior author on the new work. Adults in the U.S. who used e-cigarettes daily and also smoked combustible cigarettes were more likely to quit smoking than those who smoked but used e-cigarettes less frequently. Justice announced the task force that they say will address the illegal domestic distribution and sale of electronic cigarettes.
In 2017, the campaign began prioritizing e-cigarette prevention messaging to combat increasing youth vaping rates. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved any e-cigarette products as a medicine to help people quit smoking. This is because the quality and safety of e-cigarettes has not yet been thoroughly tested, and it is not clear whether they are actually helpful for people trying to quit. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes) simulate the act of smoking, but you don’t burn tobacco when you use them. Instead, the e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that works by heating liquid into an aerosol, which you then inhale into your lungs. These electronic devices, also known as e-cigarettes, vapes, vape pens, personal vaporizers, e-cigars, pod systems, mods and e-hookah, are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. Because of the lack of long-term data and the fact that patients have died from EVALI, the prognosis for those affected remains uncertain. Researchers are working hard to learn as much as possible about the illness, its causes, and the odds for making a full recovery. "We recommend that patients see a pulmonologist within one to two weeks after being discharged to undergo testing of lung function and pulse oximetry [level of oxygen in the blood]," she says.
Nicotine pouches, led by top-selling Zyn by Swedish Match, have become increasingly popular among adult tobacco consumers, particularly those trying to lower or end their traditional or electronic cigarette consumption. Chalmers said some students are realizing the dangers of vaping after seeing their peers struggle with nicotine addictions. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
The Mountain state has fewer restrictions than Wyoming and allows the sale of e-cigarettes to people under 21. Researchers from online prescription marketplace Universal Drugstore, analyzed federal and state health data on air quality, youth obesity, sports participation, mental health, test scores, and youth e-cigarette use. Based on a 2023 survey, the team found Wyoming had the highest rate of youth vaping, with nearly one in three teens using e-cigarettes in the last year, despite the state's no-sale laws for residents under 21. Researchers noted that they were unable to assess any association between e-cigarette nicotine formulation and cigarette cessation outcomes. Another potential limitation was that the study only included adult participants who reported smoking within the previous 30 days, limiting information about younger smokers and former smokers. In that same vein, 5.9 million people began vaping, bringing the total use of tobacco products among those 12 and older to 64.4 million.
In smoking and school disengagement (e.g. truancy), students often choose to affiliate with similar peers [28, 29]. Smoking prevalence has been lower in schools where educational attainment and attendance are better than predicted based on student socio-demographic factors, indicating the importance of positive school ethos [30]. Yet, other school-level factors than school connectedness [22] have rarely been studied in connection with susceptibility. Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes.
The liquid and vapour contain some potentially harmful chemicals also found in cigarette smoke, but at a much lower level. Find out more about e-cigarettes, e-liquids and vaping to quit smoking on the Better Health website. In many e-cigarettes, puffing activates the battery-powered heating device, which vaporizes the liquid in the cartridge. The person then inhales the resulting aerosol or vapor (called vaping).
Median odds ratio (MOR), which shows the difference between two respondents with identical student-level characteristics from two randomly chosen different schools, was calculated to express between-school variance on the odds ratio scale [36]. The analysis was not pre-registered, and the results should be considered exploratory. Scholastic Real Cost of VapingThe FDA collaborated with the Scholastic Corporation to develop lessons, activities and resources for teachers to increase awareness about the health consequences of youth e-cigarette use. Stanford Medicine is an integrated academic health system comprising the Stanford School of Medicine and adult and pediatric health care delivery systems. Even though you may not smell it, third-hand particulates cling to surfaces and dust and can be breathed deep into the lungs or absorbed through the skin. It’s easy to quit vaping. One vape pod delivers as much addictive nicotine as 20 cigarettes. Vaping trains the brain to expect more nicotine and creates the desire to vape even more. That makes it harder to stop vaping and also increases the chance that teens will go on to become smokers, too. E-cigarettes with nicotine are highly addictive and are harmful to health. Whilst long-term health effects are not fully understood, it has been established that they generate toxic substances, some of which are known to cause cancer and some that increase the risk of heart and lung disorders. Use of e-cigarettes can also affect brain development and lead to learning disorders for young people.
This includes quit coaching, up to 2 weeks of nicotine replacement therapy, and a youth digital program for those ages 13-17. Vuse, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. Njoy is one of only three companies that previously received FDA’s OK for vaping products. Like those products, two of the Njoy menthol varieties come as cartridges that plug into a reusable device that heats liquid nicotine, turning it into an inhalable aerosol. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
Their tactics include slick magazine ads, sponsorship of concerts and auto races, celebrity endorsements and sweet, colorful flavors.21 In addition, e-cigarettes are often aggressively placed in convenience stores near candy. Flavors, including mint and menthol, are one of the top reasons young people use e-cigarettes. Candy and fruit-flavored e-liquids can make e-cigarettes appealing and seem harmless. As of July 2020, the sale of flavored e-cigarettes is prohibited in NYC. Further, in 2018, one in 15 (6.7%) middle school students reported using e-cigarettes. E-cigarette use was higher among older students, with one in 11 (9%) seventh grade students reporting use, compared to one in 38 (2.6%) in sixth grade.
That legal decision allowed sales of e-cigarettes to proceed but left many questions about their safety unaddressed. To lower the potential risks posed by secondhand aerosol exposure from vaping, some U.S. states, territories, and cities have started restricting where people can vape. There are currently more than 7,000 varieties of flavored e-cigarettes and e-juice (liquid containing nicotine that is used in refillable devices) on the market. Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, there is a lack of data on their potential health effects. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under its authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products. Fourth-generation ‘pod’ e-cigarette devices have been driven by technological advances in electronic atomization of the e-liquid.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) liquid known as e-juice (vape juice) containing highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. A federal appeals court ruled in December 2010 that the agency lacked authority over e-cigs because they offer only the recreational benefits of a regular cigarette.

The researchers studied human endothelial cells generated in the laboratory from what are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. IPS cells can become many different cell types, and they provide an ideal way for researchers to closely study cells that would be difficult to isolate directly from a patient. A.C.—managed the analytical testing programme and co-authored the manuscript.
The flavored vape juice inside contains only vegetable glycerine and organic fruit extracts. That means it's free from all the harmful chemicals we mentioned above. It's a stripped-down, vegan-friendly, nicotine-free vaping experience. When I smoked cigarettes, I dealt with inconveniences due to my addiction. I would be forced to leave the company of my friends and family to go stand outdoors, like an outcast or lesser human, so that I could prevent myself from having a withdrawal meltdown.
Among adolescents who both vaped and smoked traditional cigarettes, a higher proportion in the This is Quitting program, about 51%, reported not vaping nor smoking at seven months, compared with 30% of the assessment-only group. E-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, and pregnant women, and can be dangerous for adults who use tobacco products. The novel results for school-level factors indicate that prevention of nicotine use may be supported by facilitating nicotine-free schools through policies and programmes. This may address especially the peer selection processes, which have been observed both in school disengagement and smoking initiation [28, 29]. Further, it may influence the students’ descriptive and injunctive norms, which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
Vape aerosols may also increase the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, and asthma complications. The substitution was especially evident among cigarette brands popular with young people aged 20 and under, suggesting that flavor restrictions may increase smoking among youth as well as adults. The immense popularity of electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, among young people has led many policymakers to restrict the sale of flavored varieties. Proponents of e-cigarettes claim they’re safer than smoking because they don’t contain the more than 60 cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco smoke and are not combustible. But e-cigs still deliver harmful chemicals, including nicotine, the extremely addictive substance in cigarettes.
Vapor products have many names, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), JUULs or vape pens. Interestingly, the existence of harmful concentrations of diethylene glycol, a known cytotoxic agent, in e-liquid aerosols is contentious with some studies detecting its presence [4, 68, 70,71,72], and others finding low subtoxic concentrations [73, 74]. In this regard, either it was detected at concentrations that did not exceed the authorised limit [73], or it was absent from the aerosols produced [4, 71, 72]. Only one study revealed its presence at high concentration in a very low number of samples [5]. Nevertheless, its presence above 1 mg/g is not allowed by the FDA [73]. Figure 1 lists the main compounds detected in aerosols derived from humectant heating and their potential damaging effects.
In response to this issue, the PACT Act Amendment prohibits sellers from using the U.S. Post Office to ship e-cigarettes, vapes, flavored and smokeless tobacco products. Although e-cigarettes were first proposed in 1927 by Joseph Robinson1, it was only in the early 2000s that the 1st generation of e-cigarettes or ‘cig-a-likes’ became commercially available2,3,4. Subsequent generations of devices have evolved since then, ranging from e-cigarettes with prefilled or refillable cartridges (2nd generation) to rechargeable tank-style devices (3rd generation) with modifiable or ‘‘Mods’’ components3,4,5,6. The 4th generation of devices, known as ‘Pods’, has been driven by advances in electronic atomization technology3,7,8,9.
However, the leading causes of nicotine poisoning are smokeless tobacco products (chew and snuff) and liquid nicotine that’s used in e-cigarettes. Chewing and snorting tobacco releases more nicotine into the body than smoking. See the FAA regulations for examples of effective measures. Each lithium ion battery must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh; or for lithium metal batteries, a lithium content of 2 grams.
Cumberland County piloted CATCH My Breath in 2022, and had teachers in the restorative justice classrooms of Howard Learning Academy Middle School and Pine Forest High School run the program. The pilot was enough of a success that the county is now training one person in every middle and high school in the district to implement the program on a needs-basis in restorative justice classrooms this school year. There were also participants in a "waitlist" group, who received neither text messages through the This is Quitting program nor the assessment-only follow-up messages. Scientific American is part of Springer Nature, which owns or has commercial relations with thousands of scientific publications (many of them can be found at /us). However, 87% of people who reported using e‑cigarettes with nicotine had obtained them without prescriptions. "This relatively small study showed that e-cigarettes have the potential to decrease heart muscle blood supply, not just under the stress of exercise like traditional cigarettes but even at rest," he says. The authors of a 2019 review point out that e-liquid aerosols contain particulates, oxidizing agents, aldehydes, and nicotine. When inhaled, these aerosols most likely affect the heart and circulatory system. Of note, another study indicated that although RANTES/CCL5 and CCR1 mRNA were upregulated in flavour/nicotine-containing e-cigarette users, vaping flavour and nicotine-less e-cigarettes did not significantly dysregulate cytokine and inflammasome activation [43].
In general, most of the cytokines detected in BALF were significantly increased in WT mice exposed to PG with nicotine compared to PG alone or air control [42]. Some of these effects were found to be through nicotine activation of NF-κB signalling albeit in females but not in males. In addition, PG with nicotine caused increased macrophage and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes cell counts in BALF compared to air control, but these effects were ameliorated when animals were sub-chronically exposed to PG alone [42]. Researchers know more about the long-term effects of smoking than those of vaping. However, vaping products contain a great deal fewer harmful chemicals than cigarettes and can be an effective tool in quitting smoking altogether.
To our knowledge, no studies in Europe have examined susceptibility to e-cigarette (S-EC) use and snus use (S-SN). Glyoxal and methylglyoxal are formed by thermal degradation or oxidation of PG and VG87. Glyoxal is considered mutagenic, while the related compound methylglyoxal has been identified as a metabolite during glycolysis and is thus naturally present in the body. Methylglyoxal is also present in foods and drinks such as honey and coffee.
Such policies are critical in the absence of strong federal regulation of e-cigarettes. As of March 31, 2023, seven states and an estimated 388 counties, cities, towns, and tribes have restricted the sale of flavored tobacco products. However, this leaves a large majority of the U.S. population not covered by such restrictions. E-cigarette sales have rapidly escalated in the relatively short history of the products. Overall e-cigarette sales, as well as the total number of e-cigarette brands, increased by more than 46% between January 2020 and December 2022. Disposable e-cigarettes have nearly tripled in nicotine strength, quintupled in e-liquid capacity, and dropped in price by nearly 70% between 2017 and 2022.
Without immediate measures to stop epidemic use of these products, the long-term adverse health effects will increase. Despite their popularity, little is known about their health effects. Some suggest that e-cigarettes likely confer lower risk compared to combustible tobacco cigarettes, because they do not expose users to toxicants produced through combustion. Proponents of e-cigarette use also tout the potential benefits of e-cigarettes as devices that could help combustible tobacco cigarette smokers to quit and thereby reduce tobacco-related health risks. Others are concerned about the exposure to potentially toxic substances contained in e-cigarette emissions, especially in individuals who have never used tobacco products such as youth and young adults.
One of the first studies in humans involved the analysis of 9 volunteers that consumed e-cigarettes, with or without nicotine, in a ventilated room for 2 h [8]. Pollutants in indoor air, exhaled nitric oxide (NO) and urinary metabolite profiles were analysed. The results of this acute experiment revealed that e-cigarettes are not emission-free, and ultrafine particles formed from propylene glycol (PG) could be detected in the lungs. In line with these observations, dysregulation of lung homeostasis has been documented in non-smokers subjected to acute inhalation of e-cigarette aerosols [10]. Globally, there is an ongoing debate about whether e-cigarettes are a threat or an opportunity to public health.
Currently, e-cigarettes are not mentioned in the Illinois Smoke-free Illinois Act, which prohibits smoking in virtually all public places and workplaces, but some local ordinances do include e-cigarettes. E-cigarette aerosol is not harmless; it can contain harmful and potentially harmful substances, including nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals. While e-cigarettes typically have fewer chemicals than regular cigarettes, researchers found e-cigarettes present their own unique health risks and can increase the odds of chronic cough, phlegm, bronchitis, and asthma. Some cigarette smokers have replaced traditional smoking with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vaping, thinking it is not as dangerous. There are significant negative health effects from smoking cigarettes such as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, birth defects, and other health problems relating to nearly every organ of the body.
The success of all these enterprises hinges on the claim that e-cigarettes are healthier than traditional cigarettes. Companies like to paint a black-and-white picture of a new era of safe smoking. "Cigarettes, you've met your match," NJOY proudly proclaims in its Super Bowl ads. E-cigarettes and vaping are part of a trend going back at least nine years in the U.S. First publicized as a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, vaping caught on because it didn’t contain the carcinogens or tars found in most smoking tobacco products. Also, vaping was supposed to eliminate the dangers of secondhand smoke to those nearby.
Death from nicotine poisoning is not common in adults because of their larger body size. However, using more than one type of nicotine-containing product at the same time can increase your risk. As the name suggests, cigalike kits are designed to look and feel like tobacco cigarettes. Cigarette-style vape kits are easy to use and, rather than being refillable, take prefilled flavour cartridges known as cartomizers or refills.
Collectively, these devices are known as electronic nicotine delivery systems. E-cigarette use is often referred to as "vaping" and the aerosol created from their use referred to as "vapor." E-cigarettes come in many colors, shapes, and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, highlighters, or toys. The liquid in e-cigarettes is sometimes called e-juice, e-liquid, vape juice, or vape liquid.
The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, the Stanford Diabetes Research Center, the University of California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program and the FDA. We acknowledge the assistance of Belinda Zonnestein in sourcing and testing of the products. We further acknowledge My-Linh Tran and Joseph Sutton for their contribution to product development and provision of product details and to Sandra Costigan and Elaine Brown for the toxicological inputs. Death typically happens due to paralysis of the muscles that control your breathing, fluid buildup in your airways and heart and blood vessel failure (cardiovascular collapse).
However, to date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for quitting smoking. Although e-cigarettes have been sold in the U.S. for nearly 20 years, use patterns have shifted dramatically. As newer iterations brought higher levels of nicotine in an increasing array of flavors and product designs, youth use skyrocketed.
Starting to use e-cigarettes or switching from tobacco products to e-cigarettes increases your risk of adverse health effects. Interestingly, there is a strong difference of opinion on e-cigarettes between countries. Whereas countries such as Brazil, Uruguay and India have banned the sale of e-cigarettes, others such as the United Kingdom support this device to quit smoking.
Revenues collected, including interest and penalties, from the CECET are deposited into the California Electronic Cigarette Excise Tax Fund. In addition to the HOPE Act, we administer other cigarette and tobacco products laws affecting retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. Retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine also have responsibilities under the Cigarette and Tobacco Products Licensing Act of 2003. For more information, please visit our Tax Guide for Cigarettes and Tobacco Products. To address this problem, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and other public health organizations have called on the U.S.
The ACS encourages adolescent users who find it difficult to quit to ask for help from health care professionals. Parents should learn all they can about e-cigarette use and be prepared to help their children get the assistance they need. In 2019, more than one in six (15.2%) New York City high school students reported using e-cigarettes.
In December 2019, the legislation was included in the federal year-end legislative package and passed by both houses of Congress. President Trump signed the bill into law on December 20, 2019 and it immediately took effect. This legislation, which applies to all states, raises the minimum age of sale for all tobacco products— including e-cigarette—to 21. We provide the facts about smoking, vaping, nicotine, and the tobacco industry. We engage individuals and groups to make change in their communities, innovate ways to end nicotine addiction, and join forces with collaborators committed to preventing youth and young adult nicotine addiction and empowering quitting for all. That's hard to say — the potential health risks of vaping CBD are still hotly debated.
Parental smoking, positive attitude towards e-cigarette use in one’s age group, current smoking, and snus use increased S-EC, whereas liking school lowered it. At school level, both among girls and boys, a higher proportion of students liking school and being never-users lowered S-EC, whereas a higher proportion of students with positive attitudes towards e-cigarette use increased it. Among girls, a higher proportion of girls in the school, students with a high parental education and planning for GUSS lowered S-EC, but a higher proportion of students with parental smoking increased it.
Over the years, Evans tried to quit by using the nicotine patch, gum, and even hypnosis. When you stop using it, you can go into withdrawal and feel depressed and crabby.
