The vapor produced by e-cigarettes usually contains nicotine, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, carcinogens (cancer causing chemicals), and in some cases, flavoring linked to serious lung disease. These and other harmful substances present in e-cigarette vapor can negatively affect the respiratory health of users. The monitoring of other tobacco product sales in conjunction with the monitoring of e-cigarette sales is necessary to provide a comprehensive picture of the overall U.S. tobacco product market. As an example, NIDA point to the practice of "dripping." This involves inhaling solutions dripped directly onto the heater coil "to produce a stronger throat hit." The specific risks of these practices are still unclear.
Researchers in a 2018 study found that cinnamaldehyde (found in cinnamon), o-vanillin (found in vanilla), and pentanedione (found in honey) all had toxic effects on cells. Studies suggest that nicotine-free vaping can irritate the respiratory system, cause cell death, trigger inflammation, and harm blood vessels. The e-liquid comes in a Juul pod or J-pod cartridge, which usually contains nicotine.
Conducted from October 2021 to October 2023, the study involved 1,503 adolescents ages from across the United States who reported past 30-day e-cigarette use and were interested in quitting. Compared to a control group, participants who received the interactive text message program were 35% more likely to report not using nicotine at the 7-month study endpoint. Quit rates were 37.8% in the intervention groups compared to 28% in the control group. In North Macedonia, Italy, Malta, Austria, Luxembourg, and Belgium, the age for legal vending is 16. Since January 1, 2007, all cigarette machines in public places in Germany must attempt to verify a customer's age by requiring the insertion of a debit card.
Vaping is the term often used to describe the act of using an electronic cigarette. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid solution — usually, but not always, containing nicotine — turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. If the base nicotine mixture is not palatable, many flavors, such as mint, apple and others, can make vaping attractive, especially to adolescents. "We also did not see evidence that teens who quit vaping transitioned to smoking," added Graham. The text message intervention tested in this study is called This is Quitting, now part of the EX Program from Truth Initiative.

Although PG and glycerol are the major components of e-liquids other components have been detected. Of note, the analysis identified formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein [4], 3 carbonyl compounds with known high toxicity [63,64,65,66,67]. While no information was given regarding formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations, the authors calculated that one puff could result in an acrolein exposure of 0.003–0.015 μg/mL [4]. However, given that e-cigarette units of vaping are not well established, users may puff intermittently throughout the whole day. Thus, assuming 400 to 500 puffs per cartridge, users could be exposed to up to 300 μg of acrolein.
Almost 9 in 10 people (86%) supported prohibiting the sale of e‑cigarettes to people under 18 years of age, a substantial increase from 2019 (79%). Social and economic factors shape people’s behaviours of vaping or smoking. Generally, people living in the most disadvantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to currently smoke regular cigarettes but not use e‑cigarettes (13.2%). In contrast, people living in the most advantaged socioeconomic areas were the most likely to use e‑cigarettes but not smoke regular cigarettes (6.6%) (Figure 4). Young people aged 18 to 24 were the most likely to have used e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023, with almost 1 in 2 (49%) having used them at least once in their lifetime, and over 1 in 5 (21%) currently using e‑cigarettes in 2022–2023. More information on young people’s use of vapes and e-cigarettes can be found online.

Smoking prevalence has been lower in schools where educational attainment and attendance are better than predicted based on student socio-demographic factors, indicating the importance of positive school ethos [30]. Yet, other school-level factors than school connectedness [22] have rarely been studied in connection with susceptibility. Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes.

E-cigarettes first entered the market in 2007 and have evolved many times since then, with older versions designed to resemble regular cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and pens. E-cigarettes next evolved into "pod mods" with e-liquid sold in disposable pods. In 2015, the emergence of the brand JUUL took pod mods to the next level with high tech design, high-nicotine delivery, and youth- appealing marketing that hooked a new generation to nicotine. Without regulations, it is the "Wild West" for e-cigarette companies, says Stanton Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, and a self-described e-cigarette pessimist. Given their relatively recent introduction, there has been little time for a scientific body of evidence to develop on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Notably, the reverse was not true—students who said they smoked cigarettes were no more likely to report use of e-cigarettes when asked approximately 6 months later. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are tobacco products that have been sold in the U.S. for about a decade. Unfettered access could leave people vulnerable to unknown health hazards, but there is also the chance that greater restrictions might hurt folks who are trying to forgo conventional—and more dangerous—tobacco products.
Indeed, one of the limitations of the study was that human cells are not exposed to e-liquids per se, but rather to the aerosols where the concentrations are lower [86]. In this line, the maximum concentration tested (1000 µM) would correspond to approximately 80 to 150 ppm, which is far higher than the levels found in aerosols of some of these compounds [84]. Moreover, on a day-to-day basis, lungs of e-cigarette users are not constantly exposed to these chemicals for 24 h at these concentrations. Similar limitations were found when five of seven flavourings were found to cause cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cells [87]. It is well known that nicotine is extremely addictive and has a multitude of harmful effects. Nicotine has significant biologic activity and adversely affects several physiological systems including the cardiovascular, respiratory, immunological and reproductive systems, and can also compromise lung and kidney function [41].
Use of microporous ceramic as a wicking material improves heating efficiency, but how it affects the chemical emissions of these devices is unclear. We assessed the emissions of a pod e-cigarette with innovative ceramic wick-based technology and two flavoured e-liquids containing nicotine lactate and nicotine benzoate (57 and 18 mg mL−1 nicotine, respectively). Among the studied harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) listed by the US FDA and/or WHO TobReg, only 5 (acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, naphthalene and nornicotine) were quantified at levels of 0.14 to 100 ng puff−1. In the combustible cigarette (Kentucky reference 1R6F), levels were from 0.131 to 168 µg puff−1.
On the other hand, there is a large body of evidence clearly showing that FDA-approved medications are safe and effective ways to help people quit smoking, especially when combined with counseling. Scientists are still learning about how e-cigarettes affect health when they are used for long periods of time. It’s important to know that the aerosol ("vapor") from an e-cigarette contains some cancer-causing chemicals, although in significantly lower amounts than in cigarette smoke. The FDA has the authority to regulate all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. The FDA is working on several options to prevent youth access to e-cigarettes.
It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.
In 2021 "other" flavored devices made up 71 percent of all disposable devices sold or given away, with the most-popular subcategories being fruit-flavored and fruit & menthol/mint flavored products. These two subcategories alone made up more than half of all disposable e-cigarette devices sold or given away in 2021. Researchers said that the study’s prospective observational design allows them to infer, but not conclusively determine, a causal relationship between e-cigarette use and heart failure. However, with its large sample size and detailed data on substance use and health information, Bene-Alhasan said the study is one of the most comprehensive studies to assess this relationship to date. This guide is intended to provide general information about the California marlboro electronic cigarettes Cigarette Excise Tax and registration, collection, filing, and payment responsibilities of retailers of electronic cigarettes containing or sold with nicotine. When the liquid is used up or the battery dies, the user throws the device away.
E-cigarettes are not risk-free but are believed to cause less harm than smoking. They do not burn tobacco or produce tar or carbon monoxide — two of the most harmful parts of tobacco smoke. Smoking can raise your risk for periodontal disease or disease affecting the gums.
Nicotine pouches, led by top-selling Zyn by Swedish Match, have become increasingly popular among adult tobacco consumers, particularly those trying to lower or end their traditional or electronic cigarette consumption. Chalmers said some students are realizing the dangers of vaping after seeing their peers struggle with nicotine addictions. She believes that adding the CATCH My Breath education only solidifies it for them.
E-cigarettes and vape products are not FDA-approved cessation devices. For more information and support to help you quit contact the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) liquid known as e-juice (vape juice) containing highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
This can also increase the levels of other toxicants to the user and also expose bystanders to harmful emissions. Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), e-cigars, and e-pipes are some of the many tobacco product terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). An electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a device that heats up the liquid nicotine and flavoring for you to breathe in. There are many varieties of e-cigarettes that go by different names, including vapes, vape pens or sticks, e-hookahs, hookah sticks, mods and personal vaporizers (PVs). They can also be collectively called electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
With millions of teens and young adults using e-cigarettes, a new generation could become addicted to nicotine and face other health risks. For some adult smokers, e-cigarettes may offer a less harmful substitute for traditional cigarettes. However, long-term effects on users, second-hand exposure, and environmental effects are not yet fully known. The e-liquid typically contains humectants and flavourings, with or without nicotine; once vapourised by the atomiser, the aerosol (vapour) provides a sensation similar to tobacco smoking, but purportedly without harmful effects [3].
Kids being stuck at home under their parents’ supervision during the COVID-19 pandemic could contribute to that trend. Although there is no federal excise tax on e-cigarettes, states have the authority to tax e-cigarettes. Thirty-two states, the District of Columbia, and two territories have imposed a tax on e-cigarettes as of June 15, 2023. Open-system vapes also often allow you to modify things like temperature and airflow. And since you're not going to be using them over the long run, there's very little chance that their internal components will suffer significant wear and tear. The company makes the test results available for anyone to view, so you can easily verify that the CBD All-In-One vape contains exactly what the label says.
He also highlighted the ban on e-cigarettes in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, aimed at preventing health risks and curbing their use among youth. These ingredients pose significant health risks, particularly to pregnant women, children, and adolescents, and leads to issues like impaired brain development and respiratory diseases, said Dr Goel. Cumberland County Schools is implementing a national vaping and nicotine prevention program in each of its middle and high schools to try and curb rates of youth vaping. Cigarettes pushed me back to shivering outside the bar where a nicotine habit belongs.
Dr. Amanda Graham, chief of innovations at Truth Initiative, said youth e-cigarette use remains a serious public health concern. Launched in January 2019, the This is Quitting program has amassed more than 750,000 enrolled to date and is designed for teens and young adults looking to quit e-cigarettes. Although advertising may make it look convenient and appealing, it’s important to know that these products deliver varying amounts of the addictive chemical nicotine, which can negatively impact your learning, attention span and proneness to addiction. Many teens are taking things a step further, adding cannabis, CBD oils and other dangerous additives to vaping devices. When patients show up to the emergency department in respiratory distress from vaping, it can be challenging for physicians to treat them due to the difficulty in correctly identifying what they inhaled, especially when they are intubated or unconscious. Truth Initiative, the organization behind truth
One in five Minnesota teens (grades 6-12) have asthma, a serious chronic disease that can make it difficult to breathe. Minnesota youth who have asthma are more likely than their peers to smoke or vape, and people who have asthma who smoke or vape are likely to experience worsening symptoms and require medical treatment. Coauthors reported relationships with Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson, grants from nonprofits, and personal fees from public health authorities and from plaintiff law firms. Nine challenges have been released as part of this effort, including a challenge to address the impact of e-cigarette use. Expressions of interest for the challenges are now open, and final teams will be announced in 2022.
They are sometimes called e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, and tank systems. Using an e-cigarette is often called "vaping" or "JUULing." 2Most e-cigarette users do not consider themselves to be smokers. E-cigarettes, vapes, vape or hookah pens, e-pipes, and other vaping products are battery-powered devices that allow users to inhale, or vape, aerosolized liquid (e-juice).
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.
These findings can reflect general openness to nicotine use, indicated by a previous study showing considerable overlap between susceptibility types [24]. Several school-level factors have a role in both youth tobacco use and educational pathways. These include school rules and policies, physical environment, curriculum, discipline, school health services, school social and learning environment, student commitment to learning and school community as well as parents and the broader community [26]. Further, school influence partly occurs through the perceptions of smoking behaviour in the social network (descriptive norms) and perceptions of social network beliefs (injunctive norms), which both predict smoking initiation among youth [27].
The ACS encourages young people currently using any of these products to ask for help in quitting and to quit as soon as possible. E-cigarettes can be especially harmful for young people because nicotine affects them in different ways than adults. People who use e-cigarettes should make sure they do not vape around children and ensure they always store e-cigarettes and e-liquids out of reach of children when not in use.
The harmful effects of CS and their deleterious consequences are both well recognised and widely investigated. However, and based on the studies carried out so far, it seems that e-cigarette consumption is less toxic than tobacco smoking. This does not necessarily mean, however, that e-cigarettes are free from hazardous effects. Indeed, studies investigating their long-term effects on human health are urgently required. In this regard, the main additional studies needed in this field are summarized in Table 3.
Njoy’s products accounted for less than 3% of U.S. e-cigarette sales in the past year, according to retail data from Nielsen. vuse electronic cigarette refills, owned by Reynolds American, and Juul control about 60% of the market, while hundreds of disposable brands account for the rest. The market share of disposable e-cigarette products increased from 52.0% to 57.8% between 2022 and 2023. Among disposable e-cigarette products, those with flavors other than tobacco accounted for 94.7% of the market in 2023. Research indicates that e-cigarettes may emit harmful substances, which means there could be health risks to the user and others through secondhand exposure. The Texas Tobacco Quitline offers free, confidential, and convenient cessation services to Texas residents ages 13 and older.
